The upholding of the Affordable Care Act by the Supreme Court could keep people from fulfilling the American dream, said Rep. Dave Camp, R-Midland. Camp, chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, said Thursday the Court's decision will only slow the economy further and hinder Americans from finding the jobs they need to fulfill the American dream. "This decision says you must buy a product or pay a tax," Camp said. "This is the first time in the history of this country that a law would allow for the taxation of inactivity." Camp said the taxes associated with this legislation may well approach $800 billion.

In wake of Tridge jumping, Midland Police Sergeant says there are a lot of reasons to think twice before taking the plunge

Midlandtridgejumper1.jpg
Temperatures climbed to 91 degrees on Tuesday, but the risk for injury didn't stop a group of daredevils from taking a plunge into the river to cool off. A group of young men took turns climbing the railing of Midland's Tridge, a three-legged footbridge, and jumping from the top into the waters below. “If it’s a hot day and there is water available, then kids will do something for an adrenaline rush,” said Sergeant Matthew Berchert of the Midland Police Department. “But it has never been a big problem at the Tridge — I can’t tell you the last time I heard of someone jumping.” Berchert said that there are a lot of reasons to think twice before jumping from the Tridge, in addition to it being a violation of both state and city law.

Great Lakes Loons Struggle Despite Play of Jarret Martin

In professional baseball, the statistics, numbers, wins and losses don't always tell the whole story. That could not be closer to the truth than with Great Lakes Loons starting pitcher Jarret Martin. Though the 3-5 deficit in the win-loss column may not have been acclimated to the rest of his statistics, having been named a Midwest League Mid-Season All-Star, Martin has done enough to warrant the praise of his peers. He currently ranks second in the Midwest League in strikeouts (73), but is also tied for first in walks allowed (44). In 15 starts, encompassing 72.2 innings pitched, he has amassed a 4.58 ERA. While not spectacular, by any stretch of the imagination, Martin's numbers fail to show the true scope of his performance.

Press Release: 21 MICHIGAN SHELTERS PARTICIPATE IN ‘JUST ONE DAY,’ FOCUS ON ADOPTION

On Monday, June 11, animal shelters, rescue and welfare organizations in Michigan and nationwide made a commitment to dedicate resources to adopting out animals for ‘Just One Day,’ to help them find a loving home. Organizers asked animal shelters in every state to close their euthanasia rooms and devote all their energies to promoting adoptions. Participating shelters offered incentives like discounted adoption fees, extended hours, and extra staff to help adopters make the perfect match with available pets.

“Some of the participating organizations operate this way year-round, while others are still working toward that goal,” said Michigan Pet Fund board member Christie Keith. “By adopting from any of the shelters or rescue groups that have taken the Just One Day pledge, adopters help to change the way we care for homeless pets in Michigan.”

Twenty-one out of 163 Michigan shelters participated in the first ‘Just One Day’ event. Across the state there were a total 36 dog adoptions and 50 cat adoptions from participants, with the largest contribution from the Humane Society of Midland, which adopted out 7 dogs and 19 cats on ‘Just One Day.’

Other participating shelters included:

·      Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan, 5 dog adoptions, 4 cat adoptions
·      Genesee County Animal Shelter, 5 dog adoptions, 2 cat adoptions
·      ChippewaCounty Animal Shelter, 4 dog adoptions, 4 cat adoptions
·      Bay County Animal Shelter, 5 dog adoptions, 2 cat adoptions
·      Livingston County  Animal Control, 1 dog adoption, 4 cat adoptions
·      Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter, 2 cat adoptions
·      Ingham County Shelter, 1 dog adoption, 3 cat adoptions
·      Humane Society of West Michigan, 2 dog adoptions, 4 cat adoptions

A recentAssociated Press-Petside poll found that 71 percent of Americans don’t believe shelters should be allowed to euthanize friendly pets that are healthy or who have treatable conditions.
