Midland home damaged by Sunday fire
The bedroom of a Reardon Court home was damaged by a Sunday fire, which caused smoke and heat damage throughout the structure.
The Midland Fire Department said the fire was called in at 7:24 p.m., and brought crews from all three fire stations to the home at 615 Reardon Court, where owner Mary White and five children live.

Northwood getting new entrance drive
Work on the new Northwood entrance drive is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 15. During the project, traffic on Main Street and Cook Road will be reduced to one lane to accommodate construction of storm sewers for the new street intersection.
Construction at the intersection is expected to be completed by the end of the business day on Tuesday, October 16.

Recommended county budget sees decrease
The 2013 recommended budget for Midland County represents a decrease of two percent from the 2012 adopted budget. If passed by Midland County Commissioners, the 2013 recommended budget would be $27,300,961, a decrease of $517,977 over the 2012 Adopted Budget of $27,818,938.

Midland man gets 5 years in child porn case
James Driver, 24, of Midland, Mich., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Thomas L. Ludington in the Eastern District of Michigan. In addition to his prison term, Driver was sentenced to five years of supervised release. After Driver completes his prison term, he must register as a sex offender as a condition of release.
[body]Following a four-day jury trial, Driver was found guilty on May 21, 2012, of one count of possessing child pornography. According to court documents and testimony presented during the trial, the case originated from a Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) investigation into an individual, later identified as Driver, suspected of possessing and distributing child pornography using a peer-to-peer file sharing network. Driver, who at the time was a U.S. Navy seaman stationed in Japan, admitted in an interview to being interested in child pornography for the past five years.

Saginaw County Prosecutor Michael D. Thomas delivered a 55-minute closing argument, telling the jury there was “overwhelming” evidence that Bluew planned to kill Webb, who planned to name her son Braxton. Bluew's attorney, Rod O'Farrell, spent 80 minutes arguing that the Michigan State Police's investigation was flawed and that Webb committed suicide. Thomas followed with a rebuttal argument that lasted about 30 minutes.
Prior to the closing arguments, Bluew elected against testifying on his own behalf.
The jury also convicted Bluew, who lived in Saginaw Township, of assaulting a pregnant individual intentionally causing miscarriage or stillbirth of a fetus or embryo and two counts of possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony.
A sentencing date is not yet set.

Midland County families who struggle to meet basic needs are urged to avail themselves of help at Project Housing Connect on Wednesday, November 7, at the First United Methodist Church of Midland from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.
The annual event offers those who attend free lunch prepared by the Open Door, free winter outerwear, and a free take home food box, plus housing information, health screenings, and many other services.

Once inside the door those who attend will find the church’s Fellowship Hall filled with service booths of a wide array of participating agencies which assist with utility payments, offer legal aid, and help with housing and related needs.
Again this year a scavenger hunt will steer those who come to the service booths of agencies who provide help. Attendees who contact at least five service booths and collect a star as evidence become eligible to enter the room to receive free items.
Health screenings provided by MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland were introduced at last year’s event and will be featured again this year.
Donations from the community play a big part in making the day a success. Northwood Auto Show draws 45,000 visitors
The 2012 Northwood University International Auto Show brought about 45,000 visitors to Midland to interact, view and become educated about the more than 500 product offerings presented by over 600 students of all majors.

Vball: Chemics beat Heritage, improve to 6-0

Hemlock Semiconductor and the Dow Corning Foundation have approved $100,000 for a solar exhibit at the Mid-Michigan Children’s Museum.

Phase I of this project will be completed in early 2013. The interior Solar Spot will feature a three dimensional illuminated sun fixture. Age-appropriate information panels placed in strategic locations near the south-facing windows will entertain young visitors and educate the older ones. MMCM guests will gain a better understanding of the types of solar panels available as well as a brief summary of how the panels convert sunlight into energy. The centerpiece of this exhibit will be a colorful interactive element and energy gauge.
Phase II is located outside the facility in the south courtyard. A sun-shaped patio will be shaded by an outdoor canopy featuring a combination of solar panels and colored mesh shades. The seating area beneath the canopy will provide a shaded area for MMCM guests. A distinctive solar flair will greet MMCM visitors as they enter the building. Viewed from inside the building, the flair and outdoor canopy will integrate the solar story with exhibit elements inside.

Dine out and support MidMichigan Medical Center's cancer fund
MidMichigan Health is encouraging community members to dine out at participating restaurants on October 11 for the 5th annual Bon Appetit for Hope. The fundraiser has raised more than $57,000 to date, which has been used locally to assist those with cancer. Participating restaurants will donate a percentage of an item/bill to the fund.

Local club gets three day liquor suspension
The Midland County Sheriff’s Office reports deputies posted a three day liquor suspension notice at the L&M Club 20, 511 W. Isabella Road, around noon Friday.
The suspension is a result of violations that occurred in March, including selling to minors, allowing minors to consume or possess alcohol, selling to intoxicated people and allowing intoxicated people to consume.

Bay County teen turns stalker
Breaks into lover's home in violent knife attack
BAY CITY, MI -- Ronald Beson, 18, Pinconning, is facing several felonies after prosecutors alleged his homosexual relationship with a 15 year old teen turned violent.

Beson had broken into his house and sliced his hand with a knife. The assailant had left in a truck by the time the younger teen called 911, he said.
Deputies pulled over Beson and arrested him. They interviewed the alleged victim, who said he had been dating Beson off-and-on for about the past year. Lee Township transfer station might close
The contract for the Lee Township waste disposal service ends in the middle of January 2013 and nearly 100 township residents attended a meeting to voice their concerns over the possibility that the township transfer station on South Nine Mile might close. The cost for using the transfer station has gone from $125 to $135 a year.

3 separate felonious assaults over weekend
Midland Police and the Midland County Sheriff’s Office responded to three separate cases of felonious assault over the weekend.

Sheriff’s deputies were also called to an Edenville Township home for a report that a man held a gun to a woman’s face, and told her he was going to fire.
On Sunday, deputies responded to a stabbing at a home in Sanford, where a 47 year old man suffered a cut on his torso.

MIDLAND -- MI, If Proposal 4 passes on Nov. 6, the forced unionization of tens of thousands of home-based caregivers in Michigan would be locked into the state constitution, allowing the Service Employees International Union to continue skimming millions of dollars in dues from Medicaid stipends meant to help Michigan’s most vulnerable residents, according to a new study by the Mackinac Center for Public Policy.

“There are no new services or cost savings for the disabled included in this proposal, only the legalization of a dubious arrangement that forced private citizens into a government union,” said Senior Attorney Derk Wilcox, the author of the study. “This proposed ‘collective bargaining’ is bargaining in name only, and pursued for the sole purpose of allowing the SEIU to pad its political coffers.”
A line-by-line review of Proposal 4 shows that it would not provide any programs or services to in-home care recipients that are not already available, including any improved care, new options for care recipients or taxpayer cost savings.
“If the proposal’s backers truly wanted to provide services such as training, a registry and background checks for these caregivers, they would have delinked it from the unionization issue,” Wilcox said. “They did not, and it has turned out to be a poison pill. The Legislature saw through this scheme and voted to defund the Michigan Quality Community Care Council, which was only created for the purpose of this unionization, and further voted to clarify that these caregivers arenot state employees.”
The MQC3 was created in 2004 under the Granholm administration through an interlocal agreement between the Department of Community Health and the Tri-County Aging Consortium. An SEIU attorney certified that the shell corporation was the employer of the home-based caregivers at the time. The Michigan Bureau of Employment Relations then sent ballots to about 41,000 of these people, but fewer than 20 percent were returned.
“This scheme has so many layers, it’s bound to confuse the voters,” Wilcox said. “The fact the SEIU gave the MQC3 $12,000 after the state cut off its funding should be enough to raise red flags for everyone. A union giving the so-called employer money so it can stay afloat in order to sign a contract extension just doesn’t pass the smell test.
“But we’ve seen Big Labor try to pull this scam before, as they did with the forced unionization of home-based day care providers,” Wilcox added. “They succeeded with that one for a few years, but eventually the state put an end to that money grab.”

During an inventory search of the vehicle, deputies found a small bag containing white powder. The Midland County Prosecutor’s Office charged Brian Bidwell with operating a meth lab, possession of meth, driving without insurance and driving an unregistered vehicle. Amanda Stockwell faces charges of operating a meth lab and possession of meth.

Flint woman sentenced for attempted possession of cocaine in Midland County Jail
A 34-year-old Flint woman has been sentenced for attempted possession of cocaine base while she was an inmate in the Midland County Jail.

Kara Marie Davis entered a guilty plea to the charge, and was sentenced by Lauderbach. He set the terms at 90 days in jail with credit for 88 days, $1,250 fines and costs, two years probation and to attend a drug treatment program.

Man sentenced for Midland identity theft
A 20-year-old Detroit man has been sentenced to between two and five years in prison for three counts of identity theft that occurred in Midland County.

Reginald Walker first was charged with conducting a criminal enterprise, identity theft and retaining a financial transaction device without consent. He recently pleaded guilty to the original identity theft charge and two added counts of identity theft in exchange for the dismissal of the criminal enterprise and financial transaction device charges.

David Laforge, 58, Beaverton was hurt after crashing into a vehicle while riding his bicycle. Laforge turned his bike into the path of a vehicle driven by 19 year old Kristen Keen of Gladwin. Laforge was transported by helicopter to Covenant HealthCare Cooper Campus in Saginaw.

Dow came in third behind Detroit Country Day and Ann Arbor Huron Saturday at the Power Quad, ending its season with a 17-2 record. Remaining undefeated on the season, however, is Austin Woody, Jason Chang, and Vikram Shanker. Dow High next plays at the Regional in East Lansing on Thursday.

The Center City Authority shopping area recently received a challenge grant from the Midland Area Community Foundation (MACF) for $13,000 and the Gerstacker Foundation for $24,000 to construct and install two gateway signs and 10 permanent, banner-style identity signs throughout the Center City shopping district.

Maxwell, Spartans rally for win

M-20 bridge in Midland to be replaced
The Michigan Department of Transportation has plans to replace the Karl B. Robertson Bridge in 2018. At 57 years old, the last major structural repairs were done to the bridge in 2008.

Dow Chemical sued by Akzo on paint-making process patent
Dow Chemical was sued by a unit of Akzo Nobel NV, the world’s largest paintmaker, over a patent for a high-temperature coatings process.
Akzo, based in Amsterdam, contends Dow is wrongly using polymer extrusion technology patented in 2004, according to a complaint filed yesterday in federal court in Wilmington, Delaware.

Dave Camp: Army Corps' Asian carp plan is unacceptable

The Corps released a report Friday saying it expects to “evaluate a range of options” for keeping Asian carp out of Lake Michigan by December of next year but that “Initiation of any action beyond the study is contingent upon a decision by the Secretary of the Army that a project is justified.”
U.S. Rep. Dave Camp, who got word of the report before it was released, reacted harshly to the news, saying the Corps’ refusal to complete a plan by early 2014 and instead propose a range of options was “unacceptable.”

Football: Dow JV falls to Saginaw, 40-14
The Dow High JV football team lost at Saginaw Heritage Thursday night 40-14. Nate Thurston caught a 30 yard touchdown pass from Alec Marty, breaking three tackles on the way to the end zone and Malcom Brooks added a touchdown run in the second half. Next week the Chargers travel to John Glenn.

Midland woman dies in car accident
An 87-year-old woman has died of injuries she suffered in a crash Wednesday evening at the intersection of North Saginaw Road and St. Andrews Road. The accident occurred at 6:27 p.m. Wednesday, when two vehicles collided.

Tennis: Chargers sweep Thursday SVL tournament
The Dow High Chargers swept the SVL tournament today winning its 7th title in a row. This brings the Chargers season to 16-0 on the year and 5 for 5 in tournaments.

Soccer: Dow defeats Midland 2-1
Midland High lost a tough match to cross town rival Dow High 2-1 on Wednesday. The Chemics got the score board first on a shot by Chas Wakeman in the first minute of play assited by Jake Rajewski. The Chargers scored later in the half to make it 1-1.

Meridian senior co-captain Amanda Decker had 21 digs and five aces to lead the Mustangs to a 25-15, 25-17, 25-21 win over Gladwin in Jack Pine Conference volleyball. Meridian hosts Beaverton on Monday.

Cross Country: Meridian girls take 2nd
The Meridian girls improved on their third-place finish at the first Jack Pine Conference Cross Country Jamboree by finishing second at jamboree No. 2 with 72 points on Wednesday at Mid-Michigan Community College. Meridian is off until the Midland County Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Stratford Woods.

Vball: Bullock Creek loses to Freeland
The Falcons dominated the first and third set and got a little help in the middle set to sweep host Bullock Creek 25-15, 25-22, 25-15 and improve to 26-5-3 overall and 4-0 in the TVC Central. The Lancers slip to 13-13-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

2 hurt in Midland Township crash Wednesday
A 20-year-old Midland man had to be extricated from his car after a traffic crash Wednesday afternoon in Midland Township. The accident occurred at 3:45 p.m. on East Pine River Road when Jeremy Rose lost control of his 2002 Chrysler Sebring on the wet road, and it crossed the centerline and struck a westbound 2003 Ford Econoline van.

Dow High will be looking to remain in the playoff hunt as they fight for victory number 4 on the season when the Chargers (3-3) host the Hawks (2-4) of Saginaw Heritage Friday night at 7.
With a tough remaining schedule that includes undefeated Midland, Dow desperately needs a win to stay in the playoffs hunt. A team gets an automatic bid with 6 wins, but is not guaranteed a postseason spot with 5 wins, therefore Dow will most likely have to win out their remaining games to qualify.

N. Saginaw Road at the intersection of Perrine Road, and Perrine Road from Saginaw to Wackerly Street will be closed from 4-5 p.m. on Thursday, October 4 for Dow High School’s Homecoming Parade.

Vball: Midland sweeps BC Western
Tori Blake and the Midland High volleyball team displayed both brilliance and grit on Tuesday night to stay undefeated in the Saginaw Valley League. The host Chemics played mostly mistake-free in the first two sets and then overcame a stiff challenge in the third set to defeat Bay City Western 25-17, 25-14, 25-20 in an SVL match.

Dow goes 2-1 in volleyball quad
Host Dow High got 23 kills and 15 blocks from Helena Atton and 24 kills and nine blocks from Erin O’Neil on its way to a 2-1 finish in a volleyball quad Tuesday. The Chargers (26-11-5, 3-2 SVL) host a tri-meet including Frankenmuth and Saginaw Valley Lutheran Monday.
