Loons Power Past Dragons, 8-6
Bosnik, Dickson, Akins Homer; Loons Win Seventh in Last Eight Games
DAYTON, OH – Jesse Bosnik, O’Koyea Dickson and Nick Akins all homered and the Loons picked up an 8-6 win Thursday night over the Dayton Dragons. The Loons have now won seven of their last eight games played.
Bosnik’s homer in the third gave the Loons a 3-2 advantage. He just missed a second home run in this third at bat in the fifth inning, driving one deep to right but just foul.
In the sixth inning, Dickson clobbered a ball to left-center off the top of a picnic pavilion for his 17th homer of the year to give the Loons a 5-3 lead. But in the bottom of the sixth, Sammy Diaz tripled down the right field line to give the Dragons a 6-5 lead.
But in the top of the seventh inning, two strange and sloppy plays helped the Loons push across the tying and go-ahead runs. With James Baldwin on second after a double, Darnell Sweeney hit a soft chopper towards second. Second baseman Joe Terry kicked the ball towards third base and Baldwin raced around to score. Diaz’s throw from third to home was high allowing Sweeney to advance to second. Then after a bunt single by Jesus Arredondo placed runners at first and third, Sweeney scored on an errant pickoff throw by Jimmy Moran.
Akins’ long home run to left in the eighth tacked on the Loons’ eighth run.
Dayton got a couple runners on base in the ninth against reliever Daniel Carela, but Craig Stem entered in relief and struck out Sean Buckley on four pitches to record the save. Matt Shelton (3-5) notched the win in relief allowing a run and a hit over 1 2/3 innings in his first outing in one week. James Campbell started and worked four innings, allowing two runs.
Moran (2-3) took the loss.
Dickson finished with two hits to extend his hitting streak to nine games and his on-base streak to 14. Arredondo’s bunt single upped his hit streak to eight games. Sweeney went 2-for-5 and is now 6-for-9 in the series with two walks.
The Loons (31-35 second half, 65-71 overall) play the finale a three-game series against the Dragons (28-36, 58-76) Friday night at Fifth Third Field. Game time is 7pm ET. Right-hander Victor Araujo is scheduled to make his Midwest League debut for the Loons. Righty Radhames Quezada (5-8, 3.33 ERA) will be his mound opponent. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM at ESPN1009.com.

Great Lakes Captures Sixth Win in Seven Games
DAYTON, OH – Nick Akins reached on an infield single with the bases loaded and a 3-2 count in the top of the ninth inning, driving home the go-ahead run in a 5-4 Great Lakes Loons win over the Dayton Dragons Wednesday night.
Trailing by a run in the top of the ninth inning against right-hander El Hajj Muhammed, Jeff Hunt led off the inning with a single. James Baldwin bunted to third but Junior Arias, playing well-in at third base, made the play and threw out Hunt at second. Darnell Sweeney followed with a single to right advancing Baldwin to third. Pinch hitter Jesus Arredondo doubled down the left field line to bring home the tying run. After an intentional walk to Joe Winker and with two outs, Akins worked the count full and hit a grounder to short. Perez fielded the ball but fell down making the play. All runners advanced safely. Then Perez threw to third retiring Arredondo, who over-ran the base.
Craig Stem entered in the ninth and worked a 1-2-3 inning for his second Loons save.
Sweeney finished the game with four hits – two singles, a double and a triple – and one walk.
Amalio Diaz (1-0) entered the game with two outs in the fifth inning and pitched 3 1/3 scoreless relief innings to record his first win with the Loons.
Catcher Tyler Ogle drove in the first two Loons runs of the game with a two-run homer, his third since rejoining the Loons August 18. He reached base three times in the game.
Reds first baseman Joey Votto, rehabilitating a left knee injury, started at first base for the Dragons. Loons defeat Captains, 6-5
Happy Birthday to Joe!
Winker provides winning punch on special day
MIDLAND, MI – The Great Lakes Loons (29-35, 63-71) celebrated the birthday of teammate Joe Winker by rallying in the eighth to defeat the Lake County Captains (35-29, 66-67) by the score of 6-5 on Tuesday night at Dow Diamond in front of 3, 815 fans. The birthday boy thought his gift came in the sixth game when he hit a home run off of Captains reliever Cody Penny that pulled the Loons to within one. But the real birthday magic came in the eighth when his RBI-double to left-center field tied the game at 5-5 and the following double scored him as the winning run.
“I don’t really ever remember playing on my birthday,” Winker said of the night. “I think I had the day off last year, so yeah, it was cool [tonight]. I talked to my parents beforehand and I just said ‘I’m going to try and have a good game.’ You never know if you’re going to or not, but it was really nice having a good game.”
Mimicking Winker’s performance was third baseman Jeff Hunt, who connected for a home run in the seventh to make it 5-4 and hit the double that scored Winker in the eighth. While both men shared the same stat line with two hits, two runs and two RBI; Hunt will not celebrate his birthday until February 13.
The win gives the Loons the 3-1 series victory over Lake County. Picking up the win from the hill and making his Loons debut appearance was Geoff Brown. The lefty limited Lake County to one run on four hits through 2.1 innings of work. Danny Coulombe pitched a spotless 0.2 inning for his first save.
The Loons scored first on Hunt’s two-out double to left field, scoring catcher Michael Pericht from first, just beating out the throw to the plate. James Baldwin followed with a single that he tried to stretch for a double, which the Captains thwarted, but not before Hunt scored for the second run of the inning.
The Captains took their first lead in the fourth inning on a three-run homer from Alex Lavisky
and hit another off Loons starter Raydel Sanchez in the fourth. Sanchez allowed another home run in the fifth to give the Captains a 4-2 advantage before ending his night. Lake County added one more in the seventh on a sac-fly.
The Great Lakes Loons will hit the road for a final time Wednesday, before returning to Dow Diamond on Saturday, September 1. The Saturday game will be followed by a Fireworks Loontacular, powered by Dow Corning

MIDLAND, MI – The Great Lakes Loons (28-35, 62-71) were set up for their fifth win in a row Monday night at Dow Diamond, but the Lake County Captains (35-28, 66-66) rallied with two outs in the ninth inning to defeat the home team 4-3 in front of 3,822 fans.Hershiser makes Midwest League debut in loss
Center fielder James Baldwin connected for his seventh home run of the season in the eighth inning to give the Loons a late 3-2 lead; but three outs from victory, Loons reliever Daniel Carela offered two walks to the Captains and Jose Ramirez’s two-out double to the left-field bullpen scored the pair. The two runs were the first allowed by Carela as a Loon after 3.1 spotless innings in four previous appearances with the club.
In the bottom of the ninth, O’Koyea Dickson gave the Loons a chance to tie the game with a one-out double to left field. Jesse Bosnik entered as a pinch runner and moved 90 feet closer on a groundout before the game ended on Scott Schebler’s fly ball.
After a quality start from reliever Joel Lima, who made a spot start for Arismendy Ozoria and held the Captains to two runs through six innings, Jordan Hershiser made his Loons debut. The 6’8” Texan faced eight batters and allowed two hits in two innings of work.
“I feel like I got lucky,” he said about his performance, only hours after arriving in Midland. “I didn’t feel like I had really good stuff out there, but I was able to execute enough where the [batters] kind of got themselves out.”
Hershiser induced four groundouts and two pop flies. He was in line for the win, but instead Carela was handed his first loss.
Right fielder Joe Winker helped the Loons to an early 2-0 lead with a home run to right field in the first inning. The jack to right field, his ninth, scored Jesus Arredondo, who worked an infield single before Winker’s at-bat. The Captains tied it up with a Jordan Smith homer in the sixth inning.
The Great Lakes Loons will conclude their four-game series with the Lake County Captains, the Midwest League affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, Tuesday at Dow Diamond. Catcher Tyler Ogle added to the Loons total in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field, which grazed the Michigan flag before landing outside the park.
“I had swung at the first pitch (and missed) in my first at-bat [against Jimenez], so I figured I’d get a little better at timing in the next one,” Ogle said of his approach. “So I took the first pitch and I said ‘If he throws that same speed, I could probably hit that.’ And that’s what he did, he threw it middle-in and I got a good piece of it.”
The home run was Ogle’s first at Dow Diamond and second of the season. Since the catcher returned to the Loons on August 18, he has hit in all five games, for a batting average of .421 in that span.
Picking up the win from the mound was Loons starter Duke von Schamann, who fanned seven Captains in five innings of work, and limited them to one run on four hits. The win was his fourth of the season. Reliever Amalio Diaz allowed Lake County’s final run after loading the bases in the seventh inning. Danny Coulombe and Daniel Carela each recorded a strikeout as they combined to close out the final 2.1 innings. Carela notched the save.
The Great Lakes Loons will play game three with the Lake County Captains, the Midwest League affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, Monday at Dow Diamond. The Loons send RHP Arismendy Ozoria (8-8, 4.51) to the hill against Lake County’s RHP Mason Radeke (7-6, 3.62). The first 5,000 fans to the game will receive a special Dow Diamond poster courtesy of F.P. Horak. Following the game will be a Fireworks Loontacular powered by Dow Corning.

Loons shut out Captains 3-0
New Loons relievers combine for team’s fifth shutout
MIDLAND, MI – The Great Lakes Loons (27-34, 61-70) shut out the Lake County Captains (34-27, 66-66) Saturday night at Dow Diamond, picking up their third win in a row with the 3-0 victory in front of the sell-out crowd of 5,775 fans.
Loons relievers James Campbell, Scott Griggs, and Craig Stem combined for the Loons fifth shutout of the season, each pitching three innings and allowing two hits. Though unscheduled, Campbell made the first start of his professional baseball career after Greg Wilborn reported that he was unable to go earlier in the day. Griggs picked up the win, his first, while Stem notched his first save.
“It’s awesome,“ Stem said of the shut out. “That’s something as a pitching staff that you really strive for every game. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does it’s something special.”
All three Loons pitchers involved in the game are new additions to the team, with Griggs being the first to Great Lakes, promoted on August 1. Stem joined the team on August 15 and gave the Captains their best scoring chance in the eighth inning.
“I gave up a lead-off hit and then I lost control of all my pitches there for a minute,” Stem said. “But I just stepped off the mound, took a deep breath, refocused and was able to get three outs.”
The three outs came with two runners in scoring position as the result of a walk and Stem’s wild pitch. He returned in the ninth to retire the side. Lake County’s Shawn Morimando was charged the loss, his sixth.
Lake County’s only error of the game helped the Loons to their first run in the first inning. After Jesus Arredondo doubled to the right-field corner, Joe Winker’s single gave left fielder Michael Crouse trouble and allowed Arredondo to come in to score. Darnell Sweeney hit a two-out double to center field to score Michael Pericht in the second, before O’Koyea Dickson popped a home run in the third. The solo strike was his 16th of the season. Both teams were held to six hits.
The Great Lakes Loons will play game two with the Lake County Captains, the Midwest League affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, Sunday at Dow Diamond. The Loons send RHP Duke von Schamann (3-4, 3.34) to the hill against LHP Danny Jimenez (2-3, 5.24). Kids attending the 2:05 p.m. game will have the opportunity to run the bases afterwards courtesy of Farm Bureau Insurance.

Loons slam Lugnuts @ Dow Diamond
MIDLAND, MI – The Great Lakes Loons (26-34, 60-70) cashed in on eight runs Friday night at Dow Diamond, during Chemical Bank’s Raining Money Night, to defeat the league’s hottest team, the Lansing Lugnuts (30-28, 77-50), by the score of 8-3 in front of 4,226 Loons fans.
Accounting for four of the Loons 11 hits was shortstop Darnell Sweeney, who missed hitting for the cycle in the eighth inning when his line drive hit three feet below the top of the right-field wall.
“When I hit it, I thought it was gone,” Sweeney said of his final at-bat. “I hit it really good and squared it up pretty well and once I saw it hit the wall I had to get on my horses to get to second base. I’ve never hit for the cycle before and that would have been the perfect time for it, but we’ll take the win.”
Sweeney hit a triple to left field in the first inning, a single to center in the second, and a double to the right-field corner in the sixth, before nearly connecting on his sixth home run of the year, which instead fell in for a double. The win was the second consecutive for the Loons, who have totaled 17 runs in their last 19 innings, and gave Great Lakes the 2-1 series win.
Gustavo Gomez started on the hill for the Loons and picked up his eighth win to level his season record. Gomez held the Lugnuts hitless through the first three innings, but Lansing broke through in the fourth with two hits and scored two runs on a wild pitch. That was all that Gomez allowed, who fanned four batters in six innings of work. Amalio Diaz made his Dow Diamond debut, allowing one run in two innings, before Loons reliever Daniel Carela closed out the final frame.
Offensively, the Loons scored seven of their runs over the first three innings. O’Koyea Dickson highlighted the first inning by driving a home run out to left field that scored two runs; Joe Winker slapped a two-out two-run single to center field in the second; and Jesse Bosnik’s broken bat single over the infield scored another. The final Loons run came through in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Winker to score Sweeney.
The Great Lakes Loons will begin a four-game series with the Lake County Captains, the Midwest League affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, on Saturday at Dow Diamond. The Loons send LHP Greg Wilborn (2-2, 4.54) to the hill against LHP Shawn Morimando (6-5, 3.73). Fans attending the 7:05 p.m. game will enjoy a postgame Fireworks Loontacular powered by Dow Corning.

Loons over Lugnuts 9-8 in 10th
Great Lakes Loons scores nine two-out runs
MIDLAND, MI – The Great Lakes Loons (25-34, 59-70) outlasted the Lansing Lugnuts (30-27, 77-49) in Thursday night’s slugfest at Dow Diamond, delivering the knock-out punch in the bottom of the 10th inning for the 9-8 victory. A total of 5,215 fans were in attendance for the game, marking the Loons 10th sell-out of the year.
Trailing 8-7 in the ninth and facing their last out, the Loons tied the game on a wild pitch delivered by Lansing’s Ajay Meyer, which sent the home team into their 12th extra-inning game of the season.
In the bottom of the 10th, center fielder James Baldwin walked to get on base and Darnell Sweeney fought down a pitch high up in the zone for a sac-bunt that moved Baldwin to second. Then with two outs, Joe Winker sliced a grounder past the pitcher’s mound that was gloved by shortstop Shane Opitz and arrived safely at first, meanwhile Baldwin was coming in to score the game winner.
“As soon as Winker hit the ball I was thinking about going because we had two outs,” Baldwin said after the game. “He got the ball in play so my job is to run as fast as I can because you never know what could happen. As soon as I was rounding third base and I saw the ump call him safe, I was like, ‘it’s a 50-50 chance.’ So I was running full speed and didn’t hesitate, kept going, and at the end of the game we won.”
Lansing matched the Loons blow for blow throughout the night, causing seven different lead changes before the Loons had the last laugh. The Loons crafted a pair of three-run innings with one in the third and another in the fifth. The two-out rally in the third finished on a run-scoring double steal from Jesse Bosnik and Scott Schebler on the corners. All nine of the Loons runs came with two outs.
Picking up the win for the Loons was reliever Daniel Carela, who recorded only one out in his Dow Diamond debut: a strikeout to escape the 10th inning. Raydel Sanchez started for the Loons and surrendered six runs, five earned, on five hits over four innings. Matt Shelton allowed two more runs before James Campbell and Danny Coulombe combined for four shutout innings.
The Great Lakes Loons will look for the series win against the Lugnuts on Friday night at Dow Diamond. Getting the start for the Loons is RHP Gustavo Gomez (7-8, 5.78) vs. Lansing’s RHP Blake McFarland (5-4, 5.29). Following the game, 20 contestants will make a mad dash for cash in the Loons Raining Monday promotion presented by Chemical Bank. A helicopter will drop $2,000 onto the field for the contestants to collect.

Loons Drilled by Lugnuts
Jeff Hunt’s home run prevents shutout
MIDLAND, MI – The Great Lakes Loons (24-34, 58-70) managed only one run against the visiting Lansing Lugnuts, who boast the league’s best record of 78-48 and defeated the home team 7-1 before 4,527 fans at Dow Diamond.
Scoring the only run for the Loons was third baseman Jeff Hunt, who launched his fifth home run of the season to the right field scoreboard. Hunt hit off of Lansing’s Shawn Griffith in the seventh inning, after the Lugnuts had amassed their seven runs.
“Facing a team like Lansing, you normally aren’t going to score many runs,” Loons manager John Shoemaker said after the game. “We made some mistakes in the ball game early and gave them an opportunity to get the lead on us and made it really tough tonight.”
Lansing took the initial lead in the first inning when right fielder Nick Akins dropped a routine fly ball to allow in Nick Baligod with two outs. The Lugnuts added two more in the second on Chris Schaeffer’s double to left field.
Loons pitcher Arismendy Ozoria started for the Loons, but left the game after only two innings due to discomfort in his back. In for relief came Joel Lima who allowed Lansing their final four runs, all in the fifth.
Three singles loaded the bases for Lansing with no outs. A sacrifice fly and two doubles later gave the Lugnuts a 7-0 advantage. Loons reliever Scott Griggs entered the game in the sixth and delivered two scoreless innings for the Loons. Craig Stem followed suit with a scoreless eighth and ninth.
Lansing’s Justin Nicolino picked up his ninth win of the season, throwing five strikeouts in five scoreless frames. Newly added Jason Leblebijian made his Midwest League debut a good one for Lansing, going 3 for 5 with two runs and one RBI.
The Great Lakes Loons will play game two against the Lugnuts Thursday night at Dow Diamond, sending RHP Raydel Sanchez (3-8, 4.39) to the hill against RHP Anthony DeSclafani (10-3, 2.96). McVaney’s Ninth-Inning Blast Gives Whitecaps Walkoff Win over Loons
COMSTOCK PARK, MI – Jeff McVaney connected on a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, delivering a 6-5 win for the West Michigan Whitecaps Tuesday night over the Loons.
The Loons took a one-run lead into the bottom of the ninth inning following a tiebreaking solo home run in the top of the frame by Tyler Ogle, his first homer with the Loons.
But in the bottom of the ninth inning, Matt Shelton relieved Danny Coulombe and with one out walked Aaron Westlake. One batter later, McVaney’s blast sent his teammates and 7,684 fans at Fifth Third Ballpark on 10-cent hot dog night into a frenzy.
It was the second time a Loons’ lead was squashed by a West Michigan home run. In the top of the seventh inning, Nick Akins broke a 3-3 tie with a deep home run off the scoreboard in left field. The very next pitch by Slade Smith soared over the head of Ogle. Both benches were warned by Smith wasn’t ejected. John Shoemaker protested that Smith’s actions warranted banishment, but instead Shoemaker was tossed by plate umpire Jeff Andrews.
But in the bottom of the seventh, Westlake tied the score with a solo homer to straight-away center field.
Shelton (2-5) recorded the loss and a blown save. Will Clinard (1-1), who surrendered Ogle’s homer, was the beneficiary of West Michigan’s comeback and notched the victory.
Duke von Schamann started for the Loons and was charged with three runs over five innings for a no-decision. Amalio Diaz allowed a run in two innings in his Loons debut. Coulombe escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in his lone inning.
Ogle and Darnell Sweeney had two hits each for the Loons. Sweeney scored twice.
According to the Whitecaps, over 12,000 hot dogs were sold during the game.
The Loons (24-33 second half, 58-69 overall) begin a three-game series with the Lansing Lugnuts and a seven-game homestand at Dow Diamond Wednesday night. Game time is 7:05pm. The game features an appearance by four-time Stanley Cup champion Kris Draper on a MidMichigan Health Red Wings Legends Series Night. Tickets are available by calling 989-837-BALL or online at Loons.com.
Right-handed pitcher Arismendy Ozoria (8-7, 4.43 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Loons against Lansing lefty Justin Nicolino (8-4, 2.63).

Loons Drop 5-2 decision Despite Recording Twice as Many Hits as Whitecaps
COMSTOCK PARK, MI – Monday night at Fifth Third Ballpark, the Great Lakes Loons out-hit the West Michigan Whitecaps 10-5 and had numerous other hard-hit balls hit at and caught by Whitecaps defenders. But despite the offensive advantage, the Whitecaps prevailed, 5-2, in front of a crowd of exactly 5,000.
Greg Wilborn (2-2) started for the Loons and walked five batters and surrendered five runs (all earned) over four innings, throwing 87 pitches. Three of the runners who scored for the Whitecaps reached on a free pass. All of the Whitecaps runs were scored in the third and fourth innings with all the action coming after two outs were recorded. With two outs in the third, Eugenio Suarez drew a walk. Loons Slug Whitecaps Following Rain Delay
COMSTOCK PARK, MI – Play halted between the Great Lakes Loons and West Michigan Whitecaps for one hour, 31 minutes Sunday afternoon as heavy rains blanketed the Grand Rapids, MI area.
The rain delay failed to derail a rare Loons’ offensive outburst.
The Loons struck for 13 runs on 19 hits, with eight of those runs occurring after the stoppage, en route to an impressive 13-4 win over the Whitecaps. West Michigan did not score against the Loons bullpen after the delay.
It was the most runs scored by the Loons since a 14-3 win over Dayton May 19. The 19 hits tied a season high, also accomplished April 24 at Burlington. Every Loons player except Jesus Arredondo recorded at least one hit in the game. Arredondo contributed with a sacrifice fly and a sac bunt.
O’Koyea Dickson slugged a solo home run in the second inning setting the tone for the game. He finished the game with four hits, including a double, and three runs scored.
Scott Schebler and Jesse Bosnik finished with three hits each. Schebler also drove home two.
Pedro Guerrero, Joe Winker, James Baldwin and Nick Akins all had two hits. Guerrero, Akins and Baldwin drove home two each too.
Gustavo Gomez (7-8) pitched the pre-delay five innings of the game to record the win. He allowed four hits and four runs, striking out three. Craig Stem and Scott Griggs threw two scoreless innings each in relief.
Wilsen Palacios (11-9) lasted just 2 2/3 innings to record the loss, allowing five runs (all earned). Much of the Loons damage was done against Nick Avila, who was charged with six runs over 1 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits.
The Loons (24-31 second half, 58-67 overall) and Whitecaps (27-28, 63-62) play the third game of a four-game series Monday evening at 1pm. Left-handed pitcher Greg Wilborn (2-1, 3.74 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Loons against West Michigan righty Tommy Collier (9-7, 2.57). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com.

Longballs Do In Loons
Loons Offense Musters Just Four Hits, One Run
Lance Durham crushed a solo home run in the second inning to give the Whitecaps a 1-0 edge.
Later in the sixth, Jeff McVaney connected on a deep three-run shot to left field to put the home boys ahead 4-0.
Both home runs were hit off Sanchez, the Loons starter, who picked up the loss. Aside from the homers, Sanchez pitched well over 6 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, two walks and striking out three. The two homers allowed gives Sanchez 14 home runs surrendered in 2012, establishing a new single-season record for homers allowed, surpassing Matt Magill’s 13 home runs allowed in 2010.
The Loons put together a two-out rally in the eighth. With two outs, James Baldwin doubled to left. After a walk to Jesus Arredondo, Darnell Sweeney singled home Baldwin for the Loons’ lone run. In the ninth, West Michigan reliever Slade Smith walked the first two batters of the inning, before coming out of the game. Reliever Will Clinert committed a one-out error on a comebacker by Michael Pericht to load the bases. But Clinert struck out Jeff Hunt and Baldwin to end the game.
West Michigan starter Jeff Ferrell (6-4) twirled a stellar ballgame. He carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Pericht singled to left. He allowed just two hits and two walks over 6 2/3 innings.
Clinert recorded the save, his second of the year.
