Loons Slug Whitecaps Following Rain Delay

COMSTOCK PARK, MI – Play halted between the Great Lakes Loons and West Michigan Whitecaps for one hour, 31 minutes Sunday afternoon as heavy rains blanketed the Grand Rapids, MI area.

The rain delay failed to derail a rare Loons’ offensive outburst.

The Loons struck for 13 runs on 19 hits, with eight of those runs occurring after the stoppage, en route to an impressive 13-4 win over the Whitecaps. West Michigan did not score against the Loons bullpen after the delay.

It was the most runs scored by the Loons since a 14-3 win over Dayton May 19. The 19 hits tied a season high, also accomplished April 24 at Burlington. Every Loons player except Jesus Arredondo recorded at least one hit in the game. Arredondo contributed with a sacrifice fly and a sac bunt.

O’Koyea Dickson slugged a solo home run in the second inning setting the tone for the game. He finished the game with four hits, including a double, and three runs scored.

Scott Schebler and Jesse Bosnik finished with three hits each. Schebler also drove home two.

Pedro Guerrero, Joe Winker, James Baldwin and Nick Akins all had two hits. Guerrero, Akins and Baldwin drove home two each too.

Gustavo Gomez (7-8) pitched the pre-delay five innings of the game to record the win. He allowed four hits and four runs, striking out three. Craig Stem and Scott Griggs threw two scoreless innings each in relief.

Wilsen Palacios (11-9) lasted just 2 2/3 innings to record the loss, allowing five runs (all earned). Much of the Loons damage was done against Nick Avila, who was charged with six runs over 1 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits.

The Loons (24-31 second half, 58-67 overall) and Whitecaps (27-28, 63-62) play the third game of a four-game series Monday evening at 1pm. Left-handed pitcher Greg Wilborn (2-1, 3.74 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Loons against West Michigan righty Tommy Collier (9-7, 2.57). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com.
