Midland home damaged by Sunday fire

The bedroom of a Reardon Court home was damaged by a Sunday fire, which caused smoke and heat damage throughout the structure.

The Midland Fire Department said the fire was called in at 7:24 p.m., and brought crews from all three fire stations to the home at 615 Reardon Court, where owner Mary White and five children live.

MSU suffered its third home loss of the season, 19-16 in double overtime to Iowa on Saturday.

Road millage on Mills Township ballot

Mills Township officials are turning to residents to approve a millage to fund road work. The $51,569.80 raised in the first year would be used to complete remaining road projects on the township’s busiest roads to Midland.

Dow AgroSciences adopts DOW Diamond icon in rebrand

Dow AgroSciences is emphasizing its relationship as a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Co. as part of a brand transformation that will include the use of the red DOW Diamond logo.

As part of the rebrand, customers will see changes on marketing materials and products. Dow AgroSciences awarded costs of $5.3 Million.

Camp honored as Guardian of Small Business

Northwood getting new entrance drive

Work on the new Northwood entrance drive is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 15.  During the project, traffic on Main Street and Cook Road will be reduced to one lane to accommodate construction of storm sewers for the new street intersection.

Construction at the intersection is expected to be completed by the end of the business day on Tuesday, October 16.

Recommended county budget sees decrease

The 2013 recommended budget for Midland County represents a decrease of two percent from the 2012 adopted budget. If passed by Midland County Commissioners, the 2013 recommended budget would be $27,300,961, a decrease of $517,977 over the 2012 Adopted Budget of $27,818,938.

Dow Chemical/Corning labor reps meet

MIDLAND, MI -- Worker 'fatigue' and safety were among the top issues discussed when Dow Corning and Dow Chemical labor leaders met recently to discuss common concerns.

[body]The Dow North American Labor Council, which represents about 3,000 workers at 10 ten Dow Chemical Co. and Dow Corning Corp. sites across the country, met recently in Kentucky to discuss common issues.

Kent Holsing, President of United Steelworkers, Local 12075-Dow Chemical MiOps-Midland and Chairperson of the Dow North American Labor Council, said the annual meeting was mostly positive and provided a platform for the discussion of common concerns and possible solutions, and the sharing of collective bargaining data.

Dow Chemical Joins Bend Research

Dow Chemical has joined forces with leading pharmaceutical drug-delivery research company, Bend Research Inc., to offer drug-solubility solutions and new polymers. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

[body]Bend Research specializes in the development and commercialization of pharmaceutical technologies. Its leading drug development and delivery technologies include spray-dried dispersion (SDD), controlled-release, inhalation and biotherapeutics technologies.

Under the collaboration, the companies will develop and market SDD solutions which address technology gap in drug manufacturing and delivery. Moreover, they will deliver new polymers having the ability to tailor materials to meet the performance needs of specific drugs. Dow will offer hypromellose and hypromellose acetate succinate to tailor these materials and next-generation cellulosic and noncellulosic polymers for improved performance.

Diane Postler-Slattery current president and COO of Aspirus Wausau Hopital will be coming to Midland to take over at Mid Michigan Health.

Postler-Slattery, 53, has been with Aspirus for 24 years and has been in her current position since June 2005.

[body]She began her career at Aspirus as a medical surgical intensive care nurse and held other positions, including interim director of emergency department, director of special care unit, director of educational services, director of human resources, vice president of administration, chief patient care executive, chief
operating officer and chief nurse executive.

In 2008, Postler-Slattery received the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce’s Athena Award that recognizes professional excellence, a commitment to the community and leadership opportunities for women.

Tennis: Chargers sweep Regionals

The Chargers swept regionals Thursday without dropping a set. This makes four regional wins in a row for the Chargers. Next up is the State tournament next Friday, where the Chargers hope to repeat the regional performance by winning its fourth straight title.

"I keep thinking there are no new records that this senior class can break!", exclaimed coach Terry Schwartzkopf. "... but they keep finding things. For the first time, they have swept regionals. This class is amazing."
