Dow Kokam to supply batteries to France's LUMENEO
In conjunction with the Paris Motor Show, Dow Kokam announces its agreement to supply advanced lithium-ion battery systems to the French electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer LUMENEO to power the NEOMA EV.
[body]
The innovative all-electric ultra-compact car can seat four passengers in a vehicle that is only 2.69 m long. Dow Kokam is supplying its XSYST™ 7 kWh lithium-ion energy system, featuring water thermal management, which increases vehicle range in winter and improves battery lifetime and safety. LUMENEO worked closely with Dow Kokam to incorporate this advanced battery solution in the new, flexible NEOMA vehicle.
“We are excited to partner with LUMENEO to produce an innovative electric vehicle that offers a real and viable option for ultra-compact EV driving with a convenient and capable ride,” said Jean-Francois Herchin, Vice President of Dow Kokam. “Dow Kokam’s revolutionary energy storage technology provides the right combination of energy density and size to meet the custom needs of the streamlined and sleek NEOMA.”
Each NEOMA will feature two Dow Kokam XSYST™ 7 kWh batteries, for a 14 kWh system that gives each vehicle up to 140 kilometers of electric-only range, and requires only four hours to recharge. Dow Kokam’s superior battery system, coupled with LUMENEO’s electric motor, provide highly efficient performance, and can reach speeds of up to 110 km/h. The NEOMA is ideal for routine urban driving, and its all-electric system means the NEOMA generates no CO2 emissions, smoke or noise when it is running; greatly improving the driving experience.
Dow Kokam is majority owned by the Dow Chemical Co. The Midland Battery Park, Midland, Michigan, U.S.A., is designed to manufacture Dow Kokam large format battery cells for global supply. [/body]

Sat Oct 6: All Day Trippin' Down the Chippewa
Registration deadline is Saturday Sep, 29. !Tomorrow!
Call the Chippewa Nature Center at 989-631-0830 for more information
Most paddle trips on the Chippewa River are just a couple of hours, but this time out, make a whole day of it!
[body]
We’ll put in at Magruder Road and paddle all the way to our main canoe launch (just past the Pine/Chippewa confluence), with a lunch break at Midland County's Manitou Park and another rest stop at CNC's Chippewa River Access Site (near Meridian Road). (Facilities are not exciting at either place – both have pit toilets.)
The Magruder Road site is not an easy put-in site – a steep bank with a healthy poison ivy population, but once you’re in, it’s a beautiful stretch of river!
At Manitou Park, the trail up to the restrooms and picnic area is quite steep, so we’ll just tie our boats up at the bank.
In the past, this trip was an "adventure for women only", but this time we're opening it up to all genders, so gentlemen, pack your lunches! Participants should dress for changing weather conditions through the day, and bring beverages/sack lunch/snacks.
Member $28, Non-member $35. Ages 18+

Acumen Fund and Dow partner to scale social enterprises in Africa
Commitment announced at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting brings funding and technical expertise to entrepreneurs providing low-income consumers with energy, agricultural inputs, water and sanitation
At the 2012 Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting today, Acumen Fund, a nonprofit global venture fund addressing poverty across Africa and South Asia, and The Dow Chemical Company announced a collaboration to scale innovative social enterprises in East and West Africa.
[body]Working directly with pioneering entrepreneurs who are at the center of new businesses aimed at serving poor communities across the continent, this partnership aims to accelerate the development and distribution of crucial products and services in the sectors of agriculture, water, sanitation and energy. Through direct collaboration, social enterprises in Acumen’s portfolio will gain access to Dow’s expertise and technical assistance resources to help scale their businesses and better serve their customers. At the same time, these businesses will share practical insights on how corporations can achieve growth and social impact in Sub-Saharan Africa. Dow recently opened offices in Kenya and Ghana.
“This is an extremely exciting step for Acumen Fund. During more than ten years of investing, we have come to appreciate the various types of support that social enterprises require when creating new systems and solutions for the underserved,” said Jacqueline Novogratz, CEO and Founder of Acumen Fund. “With Dow’s support, these businesses have an opportunity to access valuable expertise, which will translate into substantial impact for communities across East and West Africa.”
The collaboration represents an important opportunity to create shared learning among social enterprises and global corporations whose focus is on serving critical needs in Africa at a time of significant business growth.
“Dow is proud to collaborate with Acumen to advance social enterprises for business growth in the region,” said Bo Miller, global director, Corporate Citizenship, and president and executive director of The Dow Chemical Company Foundation. “Our desire is that our citizenship efforts are an extension of our values as a global corporation. This partnership demonstrates our priorities as a company, and gives us an avenue to put our talent, expertise and financial resources to work for sustainable change.”
Despite the potential for growth and the entrance of a growing number of major corporations into African markets, hundreds of millions of people on the continent still struggle to meet their basic needs.
“The development of social entrepreneurs is a significant step in supporting local economies and addressing societal needs,” said Stephane Paquier, president, Dow Chemical Africa. “This opportunity provides a great platform to leverage the capabilities and skills of Dow, Acumen and others to provide the needed scale for sustainable growth in Africa.”
Though the region has undergone significant transformation with economic and developmental initiatives being led by governments and the private sector across several countries, it continues to be impacted by systemic challenges including lack of access to energy, agriculture inputs and safe drinking water that limit opportunity at the household level and hamper economic growth. Today, more than 75% of East and West Africa’s population lives in rural areas, the majority of whom are smallholder farmers living on less than $2 a day. Poverty is also pervasive in urban areas, with more than half of the population of some major cities living in slums without basic services like water, sanitation and electricity.[/body]

Maxwell's Spartans struggle past EMU
Midland's Andrew Maxwell MLive |
The score was a lot closer than it appeared in East Lansing, Saturday afternoon, as the Spartans beat the lowly Eastern Michigan Eagles 23-7.
Coming off a loss last week to Notre Dame, MSU (3-1) was expected to roll over Eastern Michigan, a team that has never really competed with the Spartans in past years. Yet, EMU (0-4) actually led the game at halftime and held the Spartans without a touchdown until the fourth quarter. In the end the Spartans prevailed, much to the chagrin of its fans, who had expected a game where MSU would most likely rest its starters come the 2nd half.
Until tight end Dion Sims caught a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter, MSU receivers had trouble all afternoon holding onto passes from quarterback, Andrew Maxwell. The Spartans relied heavily on running back Le'Veon Bell, whose 253 yards were a career high for the Junior, and were helped by a defense that allowed only one EMU score.
MSU looks to improve upon their dismal effort next week when they host the Ohio State Buckeyes in their Big Ten season opener.

UPDATE: 3 officers get slap on wrist
WNEM |
The officer in command that day was demoted to patrol officer, while two officers were written up for the sound problems experienced from the body microphones needing new batteries. All six officers involved that day will return to full duty.
Officers also violated policy by not turning on the in-car audio, though it would not have likely captured any audio from outside of the vehicle. The names of the officers will not be released.
Acting Chief of Police, Brian Lipe, said that the officer disciplined failed to take a leadership role and failed to take command of the situation. He also noted that the other two officers will receive a written notice in their files stating they violated policy.
Community members in attendance relayed their anger toward city officials when the conference was opened up for questions. In response to council's comment of "we must move forward," one person's response was "moving forward is firing these six officers!" Many in attendance also showed their disapproval of city council's decision to not release the names of the officers, which community members said disrespected the officers NOT involved.
One audience member didn't hold back when he stood up and spoke. He suggested that City Manager Darnell Early step down because he has failed to diversify the police department. The man made sure to mention "my job is now to get y'all off city council."
The conference ended with Mayor Greg Branch saying the officers' discipline is the extent of justice within laws applicable to this venue and that the city will work with citizens and groups to improve the service of the police and city in the future.
