Olympic involvement raises protests against Dow
The Dow Chemical Co. joined as an Olympic partner to raise awareness of the company and its contributions to sustainable solutions around the world. But not all of the attention Dow has gained has been positive -- some say Dow tarnishes the image of the games because one of its subsidiaries, Union Carbide, is linked to the deadly 1984 gas leak in Bhopal, India. Dow maintains that liabilities related to the gas leak at a Union Carbide India plant were settled before it purchased Union Carbide 16 years after the disaster. Union Carbide paid a settlement after the disaster and turned the site over to the Indian government for cleanup. Union Carbide sold its assets in India to another company, now operating as Eveready, and Dow later purchased Union Carbide.
